Two weeks before the G8 Summit in L’Aquila, Italy, more than 60 Parliamentarians from the G8-countries, Asia and Africa, gathered for the fifth annual G8 International Parliamentarians’ Conference, held in Rome, Italy, from June 22nd-23rd 2009, to call upon the G8-countries to keep their commitments towards improving global health notwithstanding the current financial crisis. The parliamentarians concluded with a very strong and forward-looking statement, entitled the "Parliamentary Appeal to G8 Heads of State and Government" which will be delivered to the G8 Heads of State and Government.

On June 17th the European Alliance Against Malaria held a conference entitled ‘Counting Malaria Out’ in Geneva, Switzerland. The purpose of the conference was to encourage stronger funding and policy commitments for the fight against malaria and the achievement of the Global Malaria Action Plan by the European Union (EU). DSW co-organised the conference and was chair (Dr. Karl Addicks, MP and member of DSW Parliamentary Advisory Committee) and rapporteur (Ms. Katharina Scheffler and Ms. Maria Bordallo) of the first session. Recommendations to the European Commission and EU member states, e.g. regarding measures on how to achieve an increase in the financial support to the fight against malaria even in times of financial crisis, were developed.
DSW helped build the capacity of Countdown2015-Europe
members on strengthening advocacy for reproductive health (RH) in the new
aid environment at a recent capacity building workshop 'Responding to
Health Systems Strengthening for SRHR and RHS'. DSW's presentation provides
the latest consolidated information about how European Union General Budget
Support, Sectoral Budget Support and MDG contracting are affecting policies
and funding for RH.
