DSW Conducts Workshop on Advocacy for NGOs in South East Asia
From December 1st - 3rd DSW in partnership with the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD)conducted its third regional workshop of the AHEAD project in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop assisted organisations from Thailand, The Philippines and Indonesia to advocate for greater national support to reproductive health in the new aid architecture. DSW trained 23 participants to affect the policy and budgeting processes of their national governments, and encouraged the development of country-based advocacy action plans that participants will implement from 2010 onwards.

DSW Presents State of World Population 2009 in Berlin

On November 18th DSW held a press conference to launch the abbreviated German version of the State of World Population 2009, a flagship publication of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). A panel consisting of Bettina Maas from UNFPA, the new Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Gudrun Kopp who highlighted the importance of health, particularily sexual and reproductive health in the context of climate change, and DSW’s Executive Director Renate Baehr discussed the publications’ findings. The press conference was attended by 40 journalists and all major nation-wide newspapers covered the launch. Additionally, DSW conducted a briefing for a group of ODA officials, government agencies, NGOs and research institutions in Berlin the day after the launch. Bettina Maas was invited to highlight and discuss the main messages of the State of World Population 2009 at this event.

World AIDS Day on December 1st in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda
DSW Uganda supported GTZ with activities at their commemoration of the 21st anniversary of the World AIDS Day. This year’s topic was ‘HIV/AIDS and Gender – Why women matter!’ DSW conducted team building exercises and activities to explore gender stereotypes and discuss their impact on HIV/AIDS epidemic developments. In Tanzania, DSW in collaboration with the Government and other stakeholders commemorated World AIDS Day, with about 5,000 participants who visited DSW’s booth, discussed sexual and reproductive health issues and received educational materials and condoms. Moreover, a large number of young people made use of VCT services at the booth. During the official commemoration event in Kenya, DSW show-cased the use of VCT trucks for testing activities. Many organisations have since requested DSW’s VCT truck for testing activities.
