DSW released Annual Report 2009/2010
In its Annual Report 2009/2010, DSW looks back at the organisation's international programme and advocacy work in the past year. Last year, hundreds of thousands youth have learned from peer educators how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and unintended pregnancies. Currently, the organisation is supporting 31 development projects in Africa and Asia. The Annual Report has been distributed to friends and supporters of DSW and can also be downloaded here.
DSW Facilitates Healthy Action Advocacy Workshop in Dodoma, Tanzania
DSW Tanzania organized an advocacy workshop on June 23rd - 25th under the Healthy Action project, funded by the European Commission. The training aimed at educating civil society organizations (CSO) on their role in influencing government decision making. DSW and 4H also invited parliamentarians to the workshop to enable a dialogue between CSOs and decision makers. The outputs of the training include strengthened advocacy skills of 25 CSO representatives, development of an action plan guiding advocacy work at all levels, face to face dialogue with parliamentarians focusing on policy and budget gaps in the health sector, formation of a task force to steer the advocacy action plan, and development of fact sheets and budget studies. Participants also visited the parliament and witnessed a session on national budget discussion.
DSW Participates in European Commission Consultations on the 2010 MDG Summit
During a civil society consultation meeting, Ms. Françoise Moreau of the EC’s DG Development agreed to be open to comments from civil society organisations (CSOs) in the preparatory stage of the United Nation’s MDG summit. Although little concrete could be said about the preparations of the summit, Moreau confirmed plans for a side event on “tax and domestic governance in Africa.” Moreover, DSW and other CSOs were encouraged to provide ideas on the upcoming paper on “communication on mutual accountability and transparency.” This communication is foreseen to become the 4th Chapter of the European Commission’s “Operational Framework on Aid Effectiveness.”
DSW Conducts National Advocacy and Resource Mobilization Training in Indonesia
On July 7th -8th, DSW together with AFPPD conducted a training workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia under the AHEAD project funded by the World Health Organization. The workshop focused on improving skills on advocacy project design and resource mobilization for advocacy projects. During the training, DSW sought to identify synergies between the AHEAD country-level work and the recently launched "Advance Family Planning" project in Indonesia, which is implemented by the Johns Hopkins University in Jakarta. To this end, project representatives participated in the training and shared information on their work.
